After the talk we had on leather I decided to take the beginner classes at Tandy Leather in Burnside (75 Akerley Blvd, Unit M, 468-3076). They hold classes every Saturday. Beginners take 4 classes and my class was from 9 to 11:30. The classes are free, but you do need to buy tools (or borrow some from a friend). I bought mine for about $40. My kit included some leather pre cut items and you get samples to work on.
We learned to tool and put a design on leather. We tried out dyes and finishes and learned to lace and stitch. 4 of us were there to learn about purses and purse parts! The store offers a class ‘deal of the day’ on something that goes with the lesson, and I can’t resist a bargain. I also found that the sale items change frequently, so a ‘look see’ was always a good idea. They have an amazing selection of purse bits and pieces.
They are always running new classes and rerunning others. The instructor was knowledgable and patient. He was open to discussing any leather topic and is usually there all day Saturday to help you with anything you need help with. Handy!
I plan on taking some more 1 day classes. I also plan on trying out some purse fittings and perhaps getting some help with that at Saturday help time.
